Maryland Commission on Civil Rights Hosts Fair Housing Month April Events

BALTIMORE – The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights will host Fair Housing Month events and discussions to inform the public of various issues with housing rights in the state. The events are free to the public and will be hosted via Zoom from noon to 1:30 on their respective days. A special in-person gathering will be April 28 in Columbia, Md.

On April 9, the commission hosts “Addressing Appraisal Bias, The Roles of Law Makers, Industry and Homeowners.” This discussion will highlight how racial bias can influence property evaluations, often leading to disparities in homeownership opportunities, wealth accumulation, and economic mobility. On April 16, the commission hosts “Enforcement.” This event will address the unique challenges faced when individuals experience housing discrimination. The panel will examine the effectiveness of current laws and enforcement mechanisms designed to protect tenants and homeowners from discriminatory practices. Register Online for ‘Enforcement’
 
On April 23, the commission will host “Source of Income.” This event will address the unique challenges faced by individuals and families whose income sources are often overlooked or undervalued in housing and lending practices. Register Online for ‘Source of Income’
 
On April 28from 10 am to 3 pm the commission will hold a Fair Housing Forum​​, at Howard County Community College’s Smith Theater, located at 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia, Md. The event is expected to be an insightful and interactive forum focused on Maryland’s Fair Housing Laws.
